Emma Soi has joined ALTEA as a juriste (legal counsel) within the team specialising in immigration law, Belgian nationality law and international family law.
Emma holds a master's degree in law with a specialisation in civil and criminal justice, obtained with distinction from UCLouvain. She chose an option in public international law, which nurtured her interest in human rights. Her dissertation, written within the Rosa Parks Human Rights Clinic in cooperation with the Ligue des droits humains, focused on prison law. Curious about issues beyond Belgium's borders, she spent an Erasmus exchange at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, where she took courses on justice and individual rights as well as gender and criminal law.
Before joining ALTEA, Emma spent over two years as a case manager at a Brussels justice of the peace court, within the Federal Public Service Justice. There, she handled judicial protection files: analysing petitions, conducting legal research, drafting draft orders submitted for the justice of the peace's approval, and reviewing annual reports and fee assessments for property administrators. In this role, carried out with rigour and autonomy, she was in regular contact with lawyers, judicial administrators and litigants, whom she learned to listen to, advise and guide with patience and empathy.
Attentive to the questions of dignity, respect for family life and protection of individual freedoms that run through immigration law and international family law, Emma puts her legal rigour and human approach to the law at the service of ALTEA's clients. She has a keen interest in human rights, ecology and sustainable development.
Emma speaks French, English and Dutch, and has a working knowledge of Italian and Spanish.
